Notes from a colonial backwater

You can only get the BBC in Canada if you have a fancy and expensive cable teevee subscription, and I'm not sure if they show Question Time anyway (probably not), but that didn't stop The Globe and Mail from reporting on the giving-free-publicity-to-Nazis fiasco. The article has changed--for the better--since it first appeared. It first graced the Globe's site as a simple controversy over a "right wing" political party appearing on QT--as if the BNP was really no different than the Conservatives (true, yes, but that's a point for another time). And the Globe's cack-handed reporting led to comments like the following:
Boy the comments on this board are weird - making the assumption the the BNP is racist - wow that's tolerance. But typical of the very tolerant left - if you don't agree with me then you are a racist.
Left by an Albertan, no doubt. If I had any real power I would nuke that fucking province--it is a complete fucking disgrace and now that its economy is going tits-up, it serves absolutely no purpose. I digress.

An excellent analysis of the BBC's decision to welcome fascists with open arms can be found at Lenin's Tomb, but I prefer this from Animadverts:
Question Time summary: All the mainstream political parties beat the crap out of the racist thug (correctly), feel self-righteous, then scrabble in the dirt over who is going to be toughest on "keepin da immign'ts out". Wooooooohooooo. Edifying.
(raking the cap jauntily in the direction of Will, who doesn't blog anymore)
