Mario Dumont is a reactionary prick
Anna wrote a while back about her disappointment in the ADQ coming from the fringes to garner enough votes on an aggressively anti-welfare state campaign to become Quebec's official opposition. Now Mario Dumont, the ADQ's leader, has said that Quebec has "attained the limits of its capacity to welcome immigrants". Dumont's comments have quite rightly attracted criticism. A recent article in the Montreal Gazette suggests that Dumont's opinions on immigration are in fact out of touch with those of the public:
Les quebecois and quebecoises have a reputation for being chauvinistic and xenophobic--see, for example Jacques Parizeau's comments after the 1995 referendum or the notion of "pur laine"--but this poll suggests that the opposite is in fact true.
Results of the Ipsos poll conducted for Citizenship and Immigration Canada in November 2006 show that more Ontarians - 35 per cent - feel Canada receives too many immigrants, while only 17 per cent of Quebecers share that opinion.
